Winter in Lake Tahoe offers thick snow, bright sunshine with the occasional blizzard, and a host of winter activities to keep the whole family entertained. The alpine ski resorts are internationally famous and attract top class skiers every winter season. But skiing is not the only winter activity available for visitors—there are lots of other exciting things to do during the bright sunny winter days and crisp starlit winter nights.

Snowmobile rentals and tours are a popular choice for exploring the local area around Lake Tahoe. There are hundreds of miles of trails that lead through the Tahoe National Forest and Truckee area. You can ride on well groomed trails weaving through magnificent pines, or detour off trail and tour cross country on untracked powder, experiencing the magic of winter in the backcountry of Tahoe.

If you choose to go out as a family, everyone can take a turn on the smooth snowmobile tracks. You can ride along and admire the view of the lake below. There are routes suitable for both beginners and experienced riders, so everyone can have some fun on the snowmobiles.

Alternatively, why not book a snowmobile trip and enjoy a guided backcountry tour. These guided tours can be customized to suit all abilities and preferences, even including stops en route for warm refreshments.

There are several areas around Lake Tahoe that are suitable for snowmobiling. The Eldorado National Forest and Tahoe National Forest has miles of roads and trails offering wonderful opportunities for winter exploration and enjoyment. With typical packed snow levels of 12 inches or more, snowmobiling is permitted in most areas. Topographic maps are recommended for those visitors not familiar with the riding areas and maps are available at the Visitors Information Center in Tahoe City.

North of Truckee there are various launching sites along Hwy. 89 and a large Sno-Park can be found about 14 miles north of Little Truckee Summit. A permit is required for use in the park.

Snowmobiles are available for rental by the half hour, or longer. Typical rental costs are around $50 for half hour. Reservations are not usually necessary as most rental companies operate on a first come, first served basis.
