Lake Tahoe Dog Sledding -- Continue

There are several dog sled companies operating in Lake Tahoe during the winter season. You can go on a five mile ride which lasts about an hour depending on how fast the track is. Sleds are available that will carry two adults and one or two small children. These sleds have a maximum load of 375 pounds.

Rides are also available that last for around two hours and take you on an 18 mile route through the backcountry of the Tahoe National Forest. You choose to glide along under the blue sky and midday sun, or alternatively, you can take a night ride and experience the forest beneath a full moon, the tall pines bathed in ethereal moonlight.

Those wanting to try out their own musher skills can book a Wilderness Expedition where they will have the opportunity to learn how to mush their own sled along with an experienced guide.

Some dog sled rides are able to accommodate infants, the elderly, and infirm or disabled passengers. Reservations normally need to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure availability. Costs will vary between dog sled companies, but typical costs would be $100 per adult and $60 per child for a ride lasting 1 hour. Trail lunches can also be provided with at least one dog sled operator. All dog sled tours are subject to the prevailing weather conditions on the day.

Why not take your camera or video camcorder along with you—many of the dog sled drivers will be more than happy to stop en route to allow you to take some souvenir pictures of the scenery, or even you and the kids posing with the dogs!
