Lake Tahoe Seasons | What to do per season?

Lake Tahoe is truly a vacation destination for every season. It offers something for everyone and regularly attracts visitors from right across the USA, most of them vowing to return the following year. From off-piste skiing in winter, to water skiing in the summer, Lake Tahoe is guaranteed to keep you busy.

Winter at Lake Tahoe

In winter, Lake Tahoe snowfall regularly exceeds 400 inches and, consequently, the area is known for being a world class ski resort with 12 alpine ski areas. Because of the huge amount of snow, the ski season lasts from November through to April with some ski runs as high as 10,000 feet. Due to the endless days of sunshine, even in the middle of winter, Lake Tahoe is known as a Winter Wonderland. However, at an altitude of over 6,000 feet, the weather can change in the blink of an eye. Blizzards and severe winter storms are fairly common. Drivers should always carry show chains in winter and monitor weather conditions at all times. The temperatures can drop to -9 at night and generally speaking, the higher up into the mountains you go, the colder it gets. The area around the lake tends to stay milder, but it still has an average snowfall in the region of 125 inches every year. With all the snow, winter is the perfect time of year to try other winter sports like snowshoeing and dog sledding. Ice skating is also a great activity for all the family to enjoy.

Spring at Lake Tahoe

Spring in Lake Tahoe is a perfect time to enjoy the warm sun while admiring the snow capped mountains. Spring tends to be a quieter time of year in Lake Tahoe, falling in the lull between the frenetic ski season and the summer boom. It can be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a better choice in accommodation and less congestion around the resorts and local attractions. The spring climate has mild temperatures that usually hover around the 50’s and 60’s. In early spring, some skiing is still available at the higher altitudes; very often for discount prices. Outdoor activities are plentiful and it is a good time to go cycling or hiking before the summer heat makes it rather unpleasant. It can also be a great time to check out the local museums before the crowds of summer descend on the lake.

Summer at Lake Tahoe

In summer, humidity is very low which creates a hot, dry climate. The lake temperature rises to 68 degrees in the height of summer; perfect for swimming and other water sports. Lake Tahoe has between 250 and 300 days of sunshine per year and during the summer months, rainfall is extremely rare. The air temperature usually averages in the mid 70’s, but has been known to rise into the 90’s during particularly hot spells. Because of the high elevation and the pure, clear air, UV levels are high and sunburn is a big risk factor. Boating and water based activities are the most popular events during the summer with visitors taking full advantage of the hot weather, but there are also plenty of other outdoor sports and activities perfect for those endless, hot days of summer. But if you do not feel like expending too much energy, even lazing about on the beach can be viewed as an activity when you are on vacation!

Fall at Lake Tahoe

In fall, the foliage shimmers with a myriad of colors, adding a whole new level to the already stunning natural scenery. During the day, the temperatures are still mild enough to enjoy plenty of outdoor activities like hiking, or boating on the lake. It is also a great time to practice your tee off on the golf courses. Evenings are cooler, but still pleasant enough to relax outdoors. Rainfall can higher than at other times of the year, but on the whole, the fall season in Lake Tahoe is warm and dry. Much like spring, fall in Lake Tahoe is considered the “off season” and the number of visitors tends to be lower than during the busy summer months. This can make it a great time to enjoy a relaxing lake cruise away from the crowds, or perhaps take a helicopter trip and enjoy an aerial snapshot of the spectacular fall foliage on the mountainous slopes above the lake. Horseback riding is another popular activity during the mild fall months. Why not take a guided tour on horseback and explore the stunning views from high in the Sierra peaks. As winter approaches and the nights grow cooler, you can always enjoy the indoor entertainment at the many casinos on the north shore.

One thing is certain, Lake Tahoe never does boring. No matter what time of year you choose to come and spend your vacation at Lake Tahoe, there is certain to be plenty of fun filled activities for you to enjoy.
